Located in Kamaishi City, at the furthest end of the Hakozaki Peninsula, lies the small fishing village of Hakozaki-Shirahama, the gateway to a national park. This aging rural community, where depopulation is a growing challenge, was once home to thriving fisheries and family-run inns. However, the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami caused devastating damage, destroying many of these inns.
Amidst the hardships of depopulation and an aging population, the community came together to revitalize an abandoned former nursery school, transforming it into Ohakozaki no Yado, a unique community-run guesthouse where locals provide warm hospitality and support.
Led by a former innkeeper who lost her business to the tsunami, local residents work together to harvest fresh seafood and prepare traditional local dishes, creating an experience that is sustainable, high-quality, and deeply connected to the region. Through this initiative, they offer guests a heartfelt stay filled with genuine local hospitality and cultural exchange.
